Scrim by HutcH Releases New Hawaiian Koa Wood Cutters

Aug 10, 2023

Scrim by HutcH has added Hawaiian Koa wood as a new option to its selection of wood handled cigar cutters.

Hawaiian Koa is a hardwood that is known for having high crush resistance and shock absorbance, while its unique grain patterns are sought after for their beauty. The tree is native to Hawaii and has been used by locals for any number of things, from bowls and housewares to weapons. While once abundant on the islands, it has become increasingly rare due to a reduction in farms growing the trees.

Like the rest of Scrim by Hutch's cutters, the body of the cutter comes from a XIKAR Xi3, which features blades made from 440C stainless steel that come with a Rockwell HRC 57 rating. They are capable of cutting the cap of a cigar up to 60 ring gauge.

Each cutter is priced at $250 and comes with a brown leather pouch to protect it from nicks and scratches. It is currently available from Scrim by HutcH, with Rick Hutchings telling halfwheel that he is adding it as an ongoing production item to the company's portfolio.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it's about so much more than the cigar – it's about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. I previously covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
